From YouTube Script to Blog Post: The Rewrite Process
A script is not a blog post, and the distance between them is bigger than most creators think. We took a 355-word tutorial script, rewrote it the way we rewrite everything for Tube2Blog, and measured what actually changed: the post came back 592 words long, only 15% of its word pairs survived verbatim, and the median sentence grew from 10 words to 15.5. The rewrite is a rewrite, not a cleanup — here's the process we ran, with the numbers from the run.
Only 15% of the Script Survives Verbatim
We started with a 355-word script in the style of a typical tutorial: 35 sentences, median length 10 words, 21 filler phrases ("you know", "like", "so", "actually"), two scene directions, and one joke that only works when someone says it out loud. Then we ran the rewrite pass and compared both documents word by word.
The headline number: of the 550 word pairs in the finished post, just 80 — 15% — also appear in the script. Word-level overlap is higher at 36%, but bigrams don't lie. Two adjacent words surviving together is the real test of whether a sentence was rewritten or just re-spaced, and 85% of the post is new prose. That's the honest definition of a rewrite, and it's why pasting a script into a converter and publishing the output produces a transcript dump instead of an article — the same failure we walked through in our six-step framework for writing posts from videos.
Spoken Sentences and Written Sentences Measure Differently
The script averaged 10.1 words per sentence; the post averaged 16.4. Median went 10 → 15.5. That shift is the fingerprint of the rewrite, and it comes from three mechanical causes we can name from the run:
Breath controls spoken length. Scripts are written to be read aloud, so sentences stop where a breath stops. Writing has no breath limit, and merging two spoken fragments into one written sentence ("A host keeps viewers for the person. A faceless channel keeps them for the words.") is the single biggest source of the length change.
Fillers pad the count without adding words. Our script had 21 filler instances in 355 words — roughly 6% of the text was "you know", "so", "like", "actually". Written prose doesn't carry them. We deleted every instance in pass two, and that single edit is where the post started sounding like a document instead of a dictation.
Scene directions are production notes, not content. Two blocks totalling 9 words came out in the first pass. Small in volume, but they flag a text written for a recording session — and they have no equivalent on a page. We stripped both before touching a single sentence of the argument.

The Rewrite Process: Three Passes, 592 Words Out
Here's exactly what we did, in order, with the measured effect of each pass:
Pass one — strip the production layer. Scene directions, timestamps, and delivery notes deleted. Cost: 9 words, plus one inside joke that depended on a face on camera. Nothing of the argument was lost.
Pass two — kill the fillers and merge the fragments. All 21 filler instances removed. Then every pair of adjacent spoken sentences that carried one idea got merged into a single written sentence. This pass did most of the work on the median: 10 → 15.5 words per sentence.
Pass three — add the reader context the script assumed. The script opens assuming the viewer already knows the channel and the stakes. The post opens by stating the problem in one sentence. That addition is most of the 237-word gap between 355 and 592 — the post grew because a stranger on Google needs context a subscriber already has.
That third pass is the part people skip, and skipping it is why so many repurposed posts read like transcripts wearing a heading. When we measured faceless channels we found the same failure from the other direction: scripts that never made it out of the video at all.

The counterintuitive part is the direction. Most creators assume repurposing compresses a video into a shorter article. Our measured run went the other way: the post is 67% longer than the script, because removing the spoken filler and adding the reader context both add up to more words, not fewer. The article doesn't shrink the video; it rebuilds it for a different reader.
